A bold move Thursday as Oregon's Republican Senator Gordon Smith breaks with the president and the Republican Party on Iraq.

In a major address on the Senate floor, Sen. Smith says he would have never voted for the conflict if he had reason to believe the intelligence the president gave the American people was inaccurate.  Smith cited the $290-billion expenditure.  The nearly 29-hundred American casualties, a number that is rising daily.

"I for one am at the end of my rope when it comes to supporting a policy that has our soldiers   patrolling the same streets in the same way being blown up by the same bombs day after day.  That is absurd.  It may even be criminal.  So either we clear and hold and build or let's go home."

The senator went on to say that they must find a way to make the best of a "terrible situation" and welcomes the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group.
