(6/26/08) A monumental Supreme Court decision affirming the right to bear arms has local residents split on the issue of gun control.
The high court did overturn the Washington D.C. gun ban that was in affect since the seventies. Some agree its a major victory for gun rights activists, but others are calling it a dangerous slippery slope.
Ralph Templeman is an attorney and local activist who used to work in Washington D.C.
He says the ruling was a politically motivated decision that could lead to an up-rise in violent gun crimes.
We're already suffering from too many handguns in this country and we have more gun deaths than any other industrialized democracy.
This will just open the floodgates."
Gun repairman Ed Boening has a different take on the decision.
" I think every law-abiding citizen should be able to own a handgun."
He says the judge was correct in the ruling and calls the decision a protection of his constitutional right to bear arms.
The court did did point out it does not issue a right to bring gun into schools.
