Commissioner Wants Her Gun At Courthouse For Protection

E-mail Print PDF
(10/29/09)  A Josephine County Commissioner made her argument to fellow commissioners this morning- telling them why she wants to bring a gun into the courthouse.

Recently-elected Sandi Cassanelli says she feels vulnerable as a public official. Cassanelli has asked for authorization to carry her concealed firearm to work.  Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson is opposed to the idea. And a memo from the court states that Josephine County judges also agree.

The memo says it is only trained law enforcement officers that should carry weapons inside the courthouse. Commissioner Cassanelli disagrees. Simply put she says the court is not secure.  “Commissioners have had death threats. I am safer in my own home than I am at work. To me the ability to defend oneself is as basic as breathing.”

Sheriff Gilbertson says he would only consider allowing it, if Cassanelli underwent reserve deputy training.  Further discussion was tabled until next Thursday when all parties, including the sheriff and legal counsel can be present.
